International Dining Club Supports a Young Sommeliers Competition

La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Australia, the local chapter of a Paris based international gastronomic Association, is again supporting an International Jeunes (Young – up to 30 years old) Sommeliers Competition in 2014. Regional competitions will be held in late April around Australia and a National Competition will be held in Sydney on 26 May. The winner of the National Competition will represent Australia at the international finals in Copenhagen on 19 September.

Australian Chaîne Echanson and National Director of the competition, John Studdert, says that the Chaîne’s involvement in the competition, and in a parallel young chef’s competition, ‘is part of its commitment to the development of development of young chefs and sommeliers  – through competitive, intense and gruelling testing conditions’.

There are three levels in the Young Sommelier’s competition:

  • a regional (State-based) competition which consists of a 1 hour written examination;
  • a national (Australian) final where the winners of regional competitions are invited to compete in a written theory test, a blind test and a service test; and
  • an international final where the national winner is invited to again compete in a written theory test, a blind wine identification tests and service tests.

The competition is based on the Court of Master Sommelier procedures.

John Studdert says that ‘he is particularly keen to facilitate the involvement of female sommeliers in the competitive process this year’. He also said that, following impressive results for Australia at the international competition in the last two years where the Australian competitor achieved third place on both occasions, ‘it is time we went for Gold’.

Entry is free and involvement in the national and international finals is underwritten by the Chaîne. This year for the first time the Chaîne will also make available funds for ongoing development.
